Olfactory Hallucinations | My First Newsletter
You’re reading my first newsletter. Yaay!
Hi there,
I’m Nafim! If you are reading this, most probably you are either one of my closest friends or that one family member who is cool enough to not to get blocked out from my social presence. So, I am planning to start a personal blog, and this is the very first step, and you are one of my very first friends who has subscribed to my weekly newsletter (Although, I don’t have my own website yet)
Every week from now-on, I am going to write about what I learned in the past few days, about the books I read or maybe I will write simply things I love and care about.
I am committed to start writing and share what I am constantly learning, talk about the trends and simply write emails on a weekly basis just to engage a bit more with my beloved ones. Besides, there are a lot of stories and interesting incidents that often happens around me but gets left saying out to no-one.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy my writing and of course reply to my emails like this one to say about further recommendations, show me how I can improve my writings and simply to talk in general.
Olfactory Hallucinations
Today I’ll tell you a story about an interesting human medical condition that is related with our brain and nervous system overall. Some people sometimes face a weird problem with their smell system. They get smells of smokes, tires, petrol or even cigarettes, although there is actually no existence of those odors or smells in real life.
Lately, for a month now, I have been facing almost the same issue with my nasal system. I constantly get a smell of something that is somewhat smoky and it almost taste like dark chocolate. Funny thing is, for the first couple of days I really enjoyed getting constantly smell of something I really love. But after almost a week now, I hate all the chocolates in the world. I have visited and talked with a couple of doctors and they said the problem isn’t with the nasal system, perhaps it is causing for either for sinus infection or some conflict between brain and nervous system. Luckily they guided me through it and said the problem will last a couple of weeks more and after that hopefully the smell will fade away.
Now, I did some study on it by myself to get to know more about the condition better, and of course to know why I got this weird hallucination of smelling unreal things in the first place. I found these blog posts really helpful. Looks like the particular issue I’m experiencing is known as “Phantosmia” (Do not click unless you’re that much interested in learning random things like me)
Another one writing that made me wondered is this article from Microsoft news.
Looks like some tiny problems can get way out of hands if bold actions are not taken in proper time. There are patients with this condition who’ve seen lions and wild animals roaming around inside their house too. But those cases gone way too far. Thankfully the problem with my hallucination is only a mild medical condition, and hope I’ll get over this weird situation of getting smell of smoky chocolates soon!
A drawing I made from memory
This is a one-point perspective scenery I drew from my memory yesterday. I tried to get a very unusual point-of-view with this one. I tried to draw this scene as if I was looking at it from a very high position, almost like a drone-shot, mixing with my imaginary two dimensional hawk eyes.
Drawing of 30 Godown, Barishal.
This is a place I often tend to visit just to hang out with my friends and to feel the ever blowing breeze by the river. Although I’m very new at drawing from memories and mixing it with interesting imaginary elements, I’m really enjoying experimenting this!
Follow me on Instagram @thefakenafim if you’d like to see more of my drawings and experiments.
My Favourite Things This Week
Book: I’ve started reading “হিমুর দ্বিতীয় প্রহর”, a very interesting one of Humayun Ahmed. Maybe this is where Himu meets Misir Ali. This is one of the last books from “Himu series” that was still unread by me because of some unknown reasons. Hopefully I’ll complete most of the chapters of Himu very soon.
Quote of the Week
Life is too short to waste, but it is also too long to be a pessimist or nihilist. Whatever you’re doing now is just a stepping-stone to the next project or adventure.

Have a great week!
